Good afternoon friends and customers of The Reef Marina.
It’s been a busy couple of months since myself and my business partners, Chris Ellis and Rob Cruz, took over the helm at Port Douglas’ beautiful and iconic marina. We’ve been dealing with listing pontoons, antique computer systems, threatened cyclones, electrical fires, plumbing failures, giant snakes and other fun stuff…. but I think we’re starting to get on top of things!
By way of introduction, Chris, Rob and myself are (like many of you I suspect) lovers of boats, fishing and all things nautical. We are embarking on this project with the goal of restoring Port Douglas Marina – now renamed The Reef Marina – as one of Australia’s premier marine facilities. Broadly, our plans are to maintain and improve the existing facilities, including the tenanted wing of the retail center. It’s a major endeavor and will take a long time, but with a bit of love, effort and a whole swag of money, I’m confident that you will see continual improvement over coming weeks, months and years. We already have a fairly heavy ‘to do’ list, but we welcome your feedback and ideas on how best we can make The Reef Marina a hub for boaters, visitors and the Port Douglas community.
Rob “Tex” Cruz has assumed the role of General Manager and has already bulked up our team. Wayne Hartley is in charge of operations and maintenance, and is ably assisted by Trevor, Jim, Steve and Joel. Mark Thompson continues to manage the slipway / work yard, with the assistance of Chris. And Elize is running the marina office (and chasing up slow payers….. you know who you are). Our marina office hours are 8am-5pm (7 days) so come over and say g’day!
Maintenance dredging – we plan to conduct maintenance dredging of the marina basin in conjunction with the Dicksons Inlet channel deepening that commenced this week. The dredge Everglade will mobilize in the marina late this month or early April and we will contact you if and when we require your boat to be temporarily relocated to another berth.
Seafood Extravaganza – the terrific Port Douglas Carnivale is celebrating its 20th year and will be held from 16-25 May (see carnivale.com.au for a list of events). The larger than life Seafood Extravaganza will be held at The Reef Marina on closing day – 25th May. We’re talking fresh seafood, food stalls, bands, more seafood… so bring your bib.
Sunset Markets – the Marina Sunset Markets will be resuming each Wednesday 2-7pm from 2 April onwards, and on most cruise ship days.
Building maintenance – as you might have noticed, the team is working hard upgrading two of The Reef Marina’s entrances and landscaping the Dicksons Inlet foreshore. These are the first steps in our maintenance and upgrade program. Apologies for any inconvenience caused and we thank you for your patience.
Our plan is to retain and improve the tenanted section of the existing marina building. If you are a Masterchef champion, day spa operator, child activities center guru, wedding / function operator, micro-brewer, ice cream executive or have that killer idea for the ultimate tourist experience… than we want to speak with you. Incentives and long term leases considered.
Now, have a great day all!
