I am excited! Today we announced the planned expansion of The Reef Marina. We have made an application to Douglas Shire Council to extend the existing marina with the addition of 45 new berths. As we have been operating at full capacity for some time, the new berths will provide urgently needed capacity for our commercial operators, some of which have new vessels on order, and for more private boats and visitors to Port Douglas. The new berths will range from 17 meters to 30 meter ‘superyacht’ berths, and include a number of multihull pens. We have also planned a separate marina arm for fishing trawlers and other working boats.
Our planned expansion will provide a considerable boost for Port Douglas’ economy. Aside from the direct marina investment, the heightened commercial activity will create employment opportunities and increase incomes throughout the region’s vital marine and tourism sectors. A single ‘superyacht’ may spend $500,000, $1 million or more a year on provisioning, crewing, maintenance & repairs, berthing, utilities, insurance etc… and this expenditure will circulate within and have an economic multiplier effect throughout Port Douglas and the wider region.
Commenting on the expansion plans, Member for Cook Mr David Kempton said “I have taken a keen interest in the development of the Port Douglas waterfront and welcome the addtional berths to cater to an increasing number of yachts and tourists”.
Ms Tara Bennett, Executive Officer of Tourism Port Douglas and Daintree added “The marina is an integral part of the tourism industry and increasing facilities for reef boats, superyachts and the fishing industry will provide long term benefits to the Douglas region”.
The planned expansion will not require dredging and is not expected to have any adverse environmental impacts. Subject to timely Council approvals, we hope to commence construction next year.
Our planned expansion is an exciting next step in The Reef Marina’s ongoing upgrade program. Since we acquired the marina about 10 months ago, over $2.5 million has been invested in upgrades to marina infrastructure, fuel facilities, dredging and the retail complex….. and there remains much to do!
We expect that the new fuel facilities will be commissioned next week and we will circulate a separate email regarding fuel hours, procedures etc.
Please let me know if you have any questions or comments regarding our planned marina expansion.
Have a splendid Port Douglas day!
